Guide Meridian

Guide Meridian/Cordata Neighborhood

Bakerview Rd.
The Guide Meridian/Cordata Neighborhood is an area of Bellingham that has and will continue to experience a great deal of change. Once a rural residential area, the neighborhood has transitioned to more commercial and industrial use during the last 10 years. Most of the change is taking place adjacent to Meridian Street, Bakerview Road (right) and Cordata Parkway. A noticable increase in traffic congestion has taken place in this neighborhood along with the commercial expansion.

Housing in this neighborhood has transitioned from mostly single-family homes to apartments, condominiums and multiple-family residences. Many of the newer apartments and condominiums have been built by the Whatcom Community College campus. A variety of retirement housing is located in the Guide Meridian neighborhood too. Senior housing options range from houses to condos to assisted living facilities.

Whatcom Community College (left) has its main campus here. This public community college serves approximately 7,000 students each quarter.

Madrona Medical Group has a large medical facility on Cordata Parkway in this neighborhood. The Madrona Medical Group provides health care for many Whatcom County residents.
Shopping

Residents do not have to leave the neighborhood to meet their shopping needs. Costco, Best Buy, Wal-Mart and numerous other retail stores and restaurants are located along Meridian Street. A Fred Meyer Shopping Center was recently built on Bakerview next to I-5. The neighborhood's current trend of growth will bring more retail stores to the area as well.

Parks

There are currently no city parks in north Bellingham. There are plans for the development of a new city park for north Bellingham in the future. When developed, the Larrabee Springs Neighborhood will provide a variety of recreational opportunities for residents in north Bellingham including parks, trails, ballfields and open space. A public golf course, the North Bellingham Golf Course is already located here.

Schools

In general, public school students living in the Guide Meridian Neighborhood attend either Alderwood or Birchwood elementary school, Shuksan Middle School and Squalicum High School.

Students who live north of Horton Way and Thomas St. in the northern section of the neighborhood are in the Meridian School District attendance area.
